Grandma Claire
My love for nature started with this woman. She lived in Highlands, NC, nestled in the Blue Ridge Mountains. My summers were spent visiting her, along with my fabulous Aunts and cousins. Our adventures together consisted of hiking the falls, collecting sparkling mica, drying and pressing all the many wildflowers, collecting pinecones, garnet crystal gem hunting, and picnicing on the boulders, along the many steams and flowing creeks. When I returned home, to my city life in San Francisco, she would send me the pressed wildflowers and always, a milkweed seed pod, that would explode, filling my room with tiny little fairy seedlings!
She was a proper Southern lady, through and through, strong, opinionated, a spirited red head, feisty, independent, huge heart, fierce, way ahead of her time, and I absolutely adored her. She was a huge nature lover, the simplicity and joy that it taught you and brought into your life. She believed in apple-cider vinegar and raw honey, as the cure all for everything. She taught me to recycle, before it was cool. She believed in the power of prayer, positive thinking, and good manners. "Dauray", she'd tell me, "Manners will get you where money won't." and John Milton's quote, "The mind is it's own place, and in itself, can make a heaven of hell, or a hell of heaven." She lived in the woods by herself, along side her huge garden and her wonderful yellow lab, Daisy. It is because of her, that I had the courage to move my family to the beautiful small town of Sandpoint, Idaho, at the base of the Bitterroot, Cabinet, and Selkirk Mountains. And it was there that I truly learned how to embody, the breathtaking powerful grace and beauty, of nature. |
